Surrounded by what is arguably China's most modern metropolis, Fengjing Ancient Town, a well-preserved example of water towns south of the Yangtze River, is model of Shanghai's efforts to preserve and develop its cultural heritage.
The town has 39 ancient stone bridges dating back to the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties (1279-1911), as well as an ancient architectural complex covering nearly 50,000 square meters. The balance of preservation and development allows residents there to maintain traditional lifestyles while enjoying modern amenities. Many live in houses by the town's canals and grow fruit and vegetables in front of and behind their houses. Along with tourists and Shanghai residents looking to retreat from urban life, egrets, too, are drawn to Fengjing, and can be seen hunting among its paddy fields.
