Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the second China International Import Expo in Shanghai on November 5, where he announced the opening of the expo and delivered a keynote speech. The following is an edited excerpt of Xi's remarks: We must have a more open mindset and take more open steps, and work together to make the pie of the global market even bigger. We need to strengthen the mechanisms for sharing benefits globally and explore new ways of international cooperation. The goal is to give more impetus to economic globalization and remove impediments as much as we could. We need to promote development through opening up and deepen exchanges and cooperation among us. We need to "join hands" with each other instead of "letting go" of each other's hands. We need to "tear down walls", not to "erect walls". We need to stand firm against protectionism and unilateralism. We need to continually bring down trade barriers, optimize global value and supply chains, and jointly foster market demand. China will give greater importance to import. We will continue to lower tariffs and institutional transaction costs, develop demonstration zones to promote import trade by creative means, and import more high-quality goods and services from around the world. China will adhere to its fundamental state policy of opening up and stay committed to opening up to promote reform, development and innovation. This will bring about opening up at an even higher level. First, China will continue to open up its market. Second, China will continue to optimize its opening-up structure. Third, China will continue to improve the business environment. Fourth, China will continue to deepen multilateral and bilateral cooperation. Countries will grow if their economies are open, and conversely decline if their economies are closed. Opening up brings progress, while isolation leads to backwardness. China's door of opening up will never close. Our policy toward foreign investment will not change. Our protection of the legitimate rights and interests of foreign-invested enterprises will not change. And our commitment to providing better services to foreign companies in their investment and business activities in China will not change. China's opening up is not a one-man show; it welcomes joint efforts from other countries; it is not a fight for spheres of influence, or a means of building a "garden" in its own backyard, but to support the common development of all countries or build a "park" that can be shared by the international community. We must remain committed to developing global free trade and investment, promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation through opening up, and say no to protectionism. Pursuing protectionism is like locking oneself in a dark room. While wind and rain may be kept outside, the dark room will also block light and air. No one will emerge as a winner in a trade war. As an old Chinese saying goes, "When you reap fruits, you should remember the tree; when you drink water, you should remember its source." China has benefited from the world in its development, and China has also contributed to the world’s development.
